BRIEF: Commission approves permit for Brentwood sports bar. - Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA)

Sep. 19--The Brentwood Planning Commission on Tuesday night approved a conditional use permit for a sports bar and restaurant at the Lone Tree Center shopping center at 6670 Lone Tree Way.

The 2,420-square-foot Red Rhino Ultra Sports Bar will take the place of the former Mosquito Lounge. It will feature between 10 and 15 television screens, a video and disc jockey booth for dancing and karaoke, and an outdoor patio area.

Owner William Worthington, who also owns a bar in San Francisco, said Brentwood's rapid growth spurred him to open the East County venue.

In addressing the commission's concerns about possible public intoxication, Brentwood Police Lt. Kevin King said Worthington had 'exceeded' the city's requirements for security.

The conditional use permit places some restrictions on Red Rhino for its first year, mandating last call at 1 a.m., and prohibiting the use of televisions or amplified noise on the outdoor patio. Those terms will be revisited when the permit expires on Sept. 18, 2008.

Commissioner Don Stirling abstained from the discussion and vote, citing a conflict of interest.
